Brainspotting

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a powerful, brain-based therapy that helps individuals process and heal from trauma, emotional pain, anxiety, depression, and performance blocks. Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting works by identifying and targeting “brainspots”—eye positions that correlate with stored, unprocessed emotional experiences in the brain.

This therapeutic approach taps into the body’s natural ability to heal itself. By combining focused mindfulness with the precision of eye positioning, Brainspotting allows clients to access deeply rooted emotional and somatic (body-based) material that traditional talk therapy may not reach. The result is a faster, more profound healing process that integrates both the emotional and physical impacts of trauma.

How Brainspotting Works

When a traumatic or overwhelming experience occurs, it can become “stuck” in the subcortical areas of the brain—regions responsible for survival responses, emotions, and physical sensations. Brainspotting allows clients to bypass the thinking brain (neocortex) and directly access these deeper regions, where long-term healing takes place.

The Process:

  1. Identifying a Brainspot – The therapist helps the client focus on a specific issue or emotional experience while locating an eye position (the brainspot) that activates or intensifies the issue.

  2. Focused Processing – The client maintains visual focus on the brainspot while mindfully observing thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations that arise.

  3. Allowing the Brain to Heal – As the brain processes the experience, physical and emotional tension often begins to release, allowing for deep, lasting healing.

Sessions are typically quiet and client-led, with the therapist creating a safe, supportive space for inner exploration.

Who Can Benefit from Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is highly effective for individuals dealing with:

  • PTSD and Trauma (including childhood trauma, abuse, or accidents)

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression and grief

  • Addiction and compulsive behaviors

  • Chronic pain and somatic symptoms

  • Performance anxiety (athletes, artists, professionals)

  • Emotional blocks and unresolved life events

Because Brainspotting addresses the root cause of symptoms, many clients experience significant and lasting relief—even when other therapies haven’t worked.

Why Choose Brainspotting?

  • Deep Healing – Accesses and resolves emotional material stored beyond conscious awareness.

  • Gentle and Non-Invasive – You remain in full control of the pace and depth of your healing.

  • Body-Based Approach – Integrates both emotional and physical symptoms for holistic recovery.

  • Flexible and Client-Centered – Effective as a stand-alone therapy or alongside other therapeutic approaches.
